HMS Queen Elizabeth cost just over £3 billion, or the equivalent of a two-bedroom flat with a parking space in St Ives. Were the towering aircraft carrier to be dropped into the picturesque town, it would most likely avoid the town council’s new rules on second homes because it would still, technically, be mobile – and it has a highly mechanised on-board weapons system.
