Jimmy Carter triggered a royal kissing scandal when meeting the Queen Mother

Former president Jimmy Carter, who has just died at 100, was known for committing a major breech in royal protocol when meeting the Queen Mother.
During his May 1977 stay at Buckingham Palace ahead of a NATO visit, which was initiated by Queen Elizabeth II, President Carter greeted the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, with a smooch on the lips.
