Blount was fresh from his three years as an equerry, an appointment he had taken up in 1954, a year after the Coronation, and which saw him accompany the new Queen on her 1956 tour of Nigeria and her state visit to Portugal a year later. He also became a lifelong friend of Princess Margaret.
